Why is Halloween celebrated?
The history of Halloween dates back to the early Celtic festival of Samhain but has been a popular annual event celebrated on October 31st in North America and Canada. In recent years, this trend has made its way across the pond and has quickly gained a popular following in the UK.
Ancient Celts who lived in the UK, northern France and the Republic of Ireland believed that the change in the seasons from summer harvest to winter had a close connection to human death. The night before the new year began, it was believed that the border between the realm of the dead and the living would blur, allowing ghosts to wander back to earth for one night only on the 31st October – Halloween!
These dead spirits were blamed for causing crop damage and general mischief as well as assisting the Druid priests to better read the future and what the New Year may bring. As these cultures were so dependent on a good harvest to ensure their survival, these predictions weren’t taken lightly and Halloween became a hugely important occasion in the yearly calendar
