Loch Lomond & Trossachs
Few cities in the world can boast that within 35 minutes drive you can be immersed in an area of natural beauty such as Loch Lomond & the Trossachs. Glasgow, however, is one of those cities. Loch Lomond & the Trossachs national park is the first national park to be set up, and is one of the most beautiful regions, in Scotland and is only a short drive from Glasgow city centre.
Loch Lomond is the largest expanse of fresh water in the UK. Standing on the edges of the great loch is Ben Lomond, standing at 3,196 feet it is the most southerly of the Munros (the name given to Scottish mountains standing over 3,000ft). The area is popular with walkers and the east bank of the loch is the route of the world famous West Highland Way. Also on the banks of the loch is Loch Lomond golf course. Rated as one of the most beautiful courses in Europe, the course is home to the prestigious Scottish Open. If golf and walking isn’t your idea of fun then why not try Lomond Shores shopping centre to indulge in some retail therapy.
If that still doesn’t sound appealing then why not get involved in some of the many water sports that take place on the loch. Loch Lomond is one of the premier sites for water sports in the whole of the UK and enthusiasts really are spoilt for choice.
On the east side of Ben Lomond begins the beautiful Trossachs area. The Trossachs area is rich in forestry and lochs and is a magnificent location for walks and cycles. The Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, near Aberfoyle is a perfect example of the Trossachs at its best. You can follow the forestry path, on foot or bicycle, through the forest and passed the beautiful loch, making it an ideal location for a picnic. There is also Loch Katrine where you can hire bikes to cycle round the loch or, if you prefer to don your sailor’s hat, you can take a cruise on the paddle steamer.
