Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014
The Commonwealth Games have been known by a number of different names in the past. From 1930 to 1950 the games were known as the ‘British Empire Games’, then the ‘British Empire & Commonwealth Games’ until 1962. From 1966 to 1974 they took on the title of ‘British Commonwealth Games’, simplified to the current name, ‘Commonwealth Games’ in 1978.
Held once every four years since 1930, (except 1942 &1946) the Commonwealth Games today are huge. There are 71 countries, 6,500 athletes and officials, 11 days of world class competitions and cultural events, hundreds of thousands of people welcomed to the host city of the Commonwealth Games, including the world’s media, with hundreds of millions more watching on television the world over.
The Commonwealth Games have been held in Scotland twice before, 1970 and 1986, both times being held in Edinburgh. In 2014 the Commonwealth Games return to Scotland and are being held in the vibrant city of Glasgow.
The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will transform many parts of the city and will commence on 23rd July 2014 with the opening ceremony at Glasgow’s Celtic Park and ending on August 3rd 2014 at Hampden Park Glasgow.
17 sports, including some mainly played in Commonwealth countries, will be on display for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games comprising: athletics, aquatics, boxing, badminton, weightlifting, lawn bowls, hockey (men & women), rugby 7s (men), squash, netball (women), cycling, shooting, wrestling, gymnastics, judo, table tennis & triathlon.
Further enhancing Glasgow’s reputation as a sporting city and complementing its existing impressive sporting venues, new facilities will be built in advance of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland.
New sporting facilities for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow include, a new National Indoor Sport Arena, National (NISA), Velodrome, National Entertainments Arena and Glasgow 2014 Hockey Centre. Many of Glasgow’s existing sporting venues are being upgraded and will play their part in Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games too, including the legendary Hampden Park which will host the track & field sports as well as the closing ceremony of the Games. Celtic Park, home to Glasgow Celtic Football Club, Ibrox Stadium, home to Glasgow Rangers Football Club, Strathclyde Park, the SECC will also play their part in the Commonwealth Games are held in Glasgow in 2014.
