Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The famous artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was born on June 7th 1868 in Glasgow. Mackintosh has left a legacy like no other on the city of Glasgow. His architectural style is known across the world and examples of his work can be seen all over Glasgow.

Some of his most famous works include the Glasgow Art School, the House for an Art Lover, Queens Cross Church, the Willow Tearooms and the Lighthouse building.

Without doubt the most famous example of Mackintosh’s work is the Glasgow School of Art. Built in 1899, the building is synonymous with Mackintosh and all that he achieved in his career. It demonstrates his ‘Glasgow’ style perfectly and where better to house an internationally renowned centre for the study of fine art. The Glasgow School of Art is based in the heart of the city (a 5 minute walk from the Holiday Inn Glasgow Theatreland hotel). The school has regular exhibitions which are open to members of the public.

The House for an Art Lover is a majestic building set in the grounds of Bellahouston Park. The house holds a host of Mackintosh’s works and the entire building was designed by Mackintosh and his wife. The venue is now open to the public to explore and is often used as a picturesque venue for weddings and other functions.

The Queens Cross Church in Maryhill is the only church that Mackintosh ever built. Built in 1899 it no longer serves as a parish church and is now home to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society and is open to tourists. Unlike any other church in Glasgow, Queens Cross Church is definitely worth a visit.

Another of Mackintosh’s seminal works is the Willow Tearooms on Sauchiehall Street. Mackintosh had become acquainted with a local entrepreneur, Miss Cranston. Cranston planned to open a series of art tearooms and wanted Mackintosh to be involved. The two brought their ideas together and the tearoom still exists to this day and has been recently refurbished to its 1903 standards. The tearoom is still an institution to Glaswegians and tourists alike.

Situated just off Buchanan Street is the ‘The Lighthouse’, built from Mackintosh designs in 1895. The building previously served as the headquarters for the Glasgow Herald newspaper but was converted in 1999 to be the city’s centre for architecture and design. Open to visitors there are numerous exhibitions and displays, many are interactive for children. This is an incredible building almost hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of Glasgow city centre.
